Qatar Airways is preparing to take delivery of its first Airbus A321LR, a long-range narrowbody fitted with 16 business class suites in a 1-1 layout. Each suite has a lie-flat bed, direct aisle access and a privacy door, the kind of cabin more often associated with widebody jets on intercontinental routes.
Delivery is expected in December 2026, with the airline targeting its first passenger flight from Doha on January 1, 2027. That date is a stated aim rather than a confirmed schedule. The seats are Airbus-supplied OPERA suites from STELIA Aerospace, finished to Qatar’s own specification, and the airline does not plan to market them as a smaller version of its Qsuite.
The jet is the first of ten A321LRs in an order of 50 A321-family aircraft that also includes 40 A321neos, with the long-range versions reportedly due ahead of the rest. Chief executive Hamad Ali Al-Khater has discussed flights of up to eight hours, which would cover key European cities. Munich has been mentioned as a possible destination, but no A321LR route schedule has been confirmed.
The order has a troubled history. Deliveries were disrupted by a dispute with Airbus over surface degradation on some of Qatar’s A350s, which led Airbus to terminate the A321neo contract before the two sides settled. The six leased A321neos Qatar once flew in an all-economy layout have since moved to Sun PhuQuoc Airways. Rivals including Etihad and ITA Airways already fly OPERA-equipped narrowbodies.
