The Rock Is Closed for Weeks Because Its Dock Keeps Failing

Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay

Alcatraz Island has been closed to visitors since October 26 and will stay closed through November 18 while crews replace deteriorating pilings under its ferry dock. Ferry service is scheduled to resume on Thursday, November 19, but the National Park Service warns that weather or construction delays could push that date back. All tours are cancelled during the closure, including the cellhouse audio tour, evening tours and behind-the-scenes experiences.

This is the third dock project of 2026. A nine-day shutdown in January followed the failure of one of the dock’s five pilings, and a six-day closure in April reinforced the three remaining serviceable ones. The current work replaces two more pilings. The dock is the island’s only regular public access point, and the island draws about 1.5 million visitors a year.

For ticket holders, Alcatraz City Cruises says direct bookings are refunded automatically to the original payment method within five to seven business days. Reservations made through third parties such as GetYourGuide or Tripadvisor must be handled through that vendor. Cancelled reservations do not transfer automatically, but new tours can be booked for November 19 or later.

The timing is not accidental, because environmental rules generally bar in-water construction in the bay after November 30. The park service says the repairs should extend the dock’s life by 20 to 30 years. Per ABC7, the ferry operator is paying for the work. The island will also close on Thursday, November 26 for Thanksgiving on its regular holiday schedule.
