For years, a complimentary room upgrade at a Marriott hotel has been something members hoped for and rarely saw coming. A new beta feature in the Marriott Bonvoy app changes that by showing eligible members their exact position on a property’s upgrade list before they even reach the front desk.
Marriott describes the tool as available to members with Gold status and above, and for now it is limited to a small group of hotels. The company says it plans to widen the test to more than 250 hotels across the United States and Canada by November, so most travelers will not see it on their next stay just yet.
The upgrade list is only part of a broader push at the brand. Marriott is also preparing a new Bonvoy Lounge concept that starts in February 2027 at about 100 premium hotels across Asia-Pacific, with roughly 220 more in Greater China set to join in early 2027. The lounges promise upgraded food and drink programming and dedicated staff at peak hours.
What the upgrade list does not do is guarantee anything. Seeing your place in line is not the same as receiving a better room, and availability on the night will still decide who gets moved. Still, replacing a mystery with a visible queue is a notable change in how loyalty perks are communicated to guests.
