Amex Is Nearly Tripling Its Houston Lounge and Giving Heathrow a Second

Rows of empty gray seats in an airport

American Express has laid out an ambitious expansion of its Centurion Lounge network. Three airports are in line for upgrades: Houston Intercontinental, London Heathrow and Philadelphia. The plans add up to a lot more floor space in places where lounges are often too crowded to enjoy.

Houston gets the biggest jump. The existing lounge is set to grow from about 8,000 square feet to more than 23,000, with an opening expected in 2028. Planned features include a specialty dining concept inspired by Houston’s food scene, a Blue Roast by American Express coffee bar, a second full-service bar, more seating and additional restrooms and showers. It is not clear whether the current lounge will close in the meantime.

At Heathrow, Terminal 5 will receive a second Centurion Lounge to complement the one in Terminal 3. It will cover roughly 9,000 square feet and is expected in 2028, with premium food and drink, varied seating, dedicated work areas and a VIP section. The design is meant to reflect London’s cultures, histories and the River Thames.

Philadelphia’s lounge is the one closing soonest. The existing space of about 6,000 square feet is shutting temporarily for renovations starting October 16, 2026, and will reopen as a two-story lounge of more than 12,000 square feet, with a full reopening expected by the end of 2027. Cardholders who pass through Philadelphia should plan on going without in the meantime. A bigger Newark lounge, covered separately, is also on the way.
