United Just Moved the Goalposts for Its Top Elite Tier

United Airlines has changed how MileagePlus members earn elite status in 2027, and the top tier takes the biggest hit. Premier 1K will require 32,000 Premier Qualifying Points, up from 28,000. The changes apply to the 2027 earning year, so nothing is different for status being chased in 2026, and status earned next year lasts through the rest of 2027 and all of 2028.

A second change removes an alternative path. Premier qualifying flights, which let frequent short-haul travellers reach status with fewer dollars spent, are eliminated, leaving qualifying points as the only measure. Silver, Gold and Platinum thresholds stay at 6,000, 12,000 and 18,000 points, but members who used to qualify through flight segments now have to meet those dollar-based totals. A minimum of four flights is still required.

Credit card holders keep an edge. The cap on points earned from United Club cards rises from 28,000 to 32,000, and the five percent points boost is now limited to cardholders. To qualify for it, a member needs an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, plus Premier status in 2027.

United is also adding dynamic pricing to PlusPoints upgrades, though early reports offered few details on how it will work. Travellers who relied on flight counts to reach status should check their 2027 plans against the new points-only rules soon.
