Newark’s Lounge Drought Ends in 2027 With Amex’s Biggest Yet

A modern airport lounge with seating and a bar

American Express has revealed plans for a Centurion Lounge in Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport that will be the largest in its network. The lounge has grown to 30,000 square feet across two floors, up from an originally planned 18,000 square feet. Opening is now expected in 2027, a delay from the previously planned 2026 date.

The design will draw on New Jersey’s cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Planned features include a Blue Roast by American Express coffee and wellness bar serving espresso drinks, cold brew, smoothies and light fare such as avocado toast and chia pudding. There will be three New Jersey-inspired bars: a main bar for craft cocktails and wine, a specialty bar with a modern diner theme, and a terrace bar with gelato, Italian pastries and Italian-inspired cocktails.

Food will come from the Culinary Collective by The Centurion Lounge, created with James Beard Award-winning Resy chefs Kwame Onwuachi, Mike Solomonov, Mashama Bailey and Sarah Grueneberg. The Newark opening would also make American Express the first bank to operate proprietary lounges at all three New York-area airports: Newark, LaGuardia and JFK.

The competitive backdrop matters. According to the reporting, Newark currently has no lounges other than United’s, so the Amex space would give cardholders of other airlines a premium place to wait. Until it opens, travelers connecting through Newark will have to rely on United clubs or the terminal itself, and the extra year of waiting is the trade-off for a larger space.
