Charlotte Douglas International Airport has unveiled a $2.1 billion capital program called CLT Beyond, roughly four times the $460 million or so in the previous airline lease. Officials presented it to the Charlotte City Council on October 12. The centerpiece, which airport leaders call the showstopper, is an expansion of Concourse C with new gates and a passenger tunnel linking the expanded area to the main terminal, as part of nearly a dozen projects.
The money would be tied to a new Airline Use and Lease Agreement that the airport hopes to begin on January 1, 2027. It is proposed as a 10.5-year deal with a possible five-year extension. The framework involves five signatory airlines, American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest and United, and any qualifying airline could join later in the lease.
The timeline is not settled. The prior agreement was due to expire in June 2026 and was extended a year in May. Council members voted for a six-week review of the new deal, but Mayor Rob Harrington vetoed that motion and said he would work with the council to set a time for reconsideration. A final council vote has no date yet.
For travelers, the project matters because Charlotte is one of American Airlines’ busiest connecting hubs, and crowding in its concourses is a familiar complaint. Details such as the number of new gates and the cost of the tunnel have not been published, and nothing will be built until the lease is approved.
