Southwest Just Plugged Into the Gulf, and Etihad Gets America

Airplane wing above the clouds

Etihad Airways and Southwest Airlines announced on October 16 that their loyalty programs will link up in spring 2027. Etihad Guest members will be able to earn miles on eligible Southwest flights and spend them on Southwest travel, while Rapid Rewards members will be able to earn and redeem points across Etihad’s global network.

For Southwest flyers, the headline is reach. Etihad’s network includes new destinations such as Krabi, Zanzibar and Hanoi, plus North American gateways in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Washington and Toronto. Etihad’s Calgary service launches on October 25. For Etihad members, the deal opens Southwest’s routes across the United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

Rapid Rewards keeps its signature simplicity in the bargain: points are earned on all fares, can be redeemed for any available seat on Southwest-operated flights with no blackout dates, and do not expire. Etihad says miles can also go toward cabin upgrades, hotels, holidays and its Reward Shop. Mark Potter, Etihad Guest’s managing director, said the partnership gives members greater choice wherever their journeys take them.

One practical perk already exists on the Etihad side: travelers departing Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport can clear U.S. immigration and customs before they fly, arriving in America as domestic passengers. Redemption rates and the exact start date have not been published, and Etihad says more details will follow on its website after the launch next year.
