One of New York’s most recognizable hotels is about to disappear from the booking calendar. The Plaza, which opened in 1907, will close for roughly four years starting in January for a restoration of its 18-story landmark facade, according to The New York Times as relayed in a weekly hospitality roundup from The Points Guy.
That leaves a single holiday season for anyone who wants to stay, dine or simply wander through the lobby before the doors shut. Details beyond the timing, such as what happens to restaurants, event bookings and staff, were not part of the summary, so anyone with plans should confirm directly with the hotel.
The same roundup flagged other hotel news. In Bengaluru, India, Hilton’s LXR Hotels & Resorts brand has opened The Den, with 226 rooms and suites. In Dallas, Auberge Collection’s The Knox, designed by Martin Brudnizki, is rising in the Knox Street district beside the Katy Trail, with rates starting around $800 a night.
There was also a points-and-miles angle. World of Hyatt now lets members transfer points online, and the Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki, known as the Pink Palace, is getting a major renovation ahead of its 100th birthday. For travelers who collect landmark stays, the common thread is that several icons are changing at once, so booking windows may be narrower than usual.
