United and Air Canada Want to Pair Ten More City Routes, and Ottawa Is Watching

United Airlines and Air Canada are asking Canadian regulators to widen the joint venture that lets them coordinate schedules and share revenue on flights between the two countries. The alliance has operated since 2022, and the new application would add 10 city pairs.

The list includes Toronto to Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Washington and Cleveland; Vancouver to San Francisco; Montreal to Chicago and Washington; and Ottawa to New York and Washington. Transport Canada says it is reviewing the proposal and will weigh public interest factors and how the change could affect competition.

The airlines say the arrangement has created 20 U.S.-Canada routes, carried more than 4.3 million passengers jointly and opened access to 1,200 integrated itineraries. Cirium data shows their combined transborder seats rose 21.5 percent between July 2022 and July 2026, and together they flew 57.5 percent of U.S.-Canada seats in July.

That market share is the reason the review matters. Travelers could see more convenient connections, but regulators will weigh that against the competition effects of two dominant carriers coordinating on the same routes.
