Palma Topped Europe’s Delay Chart While Amsterdam Led on Cancellations

Passengers inside a busy European airport terminal

European airports recorded 2,425 flight delays and 70 cancellations across 22 airports on October 20, according to an aggregate drawn from FlightAware data and local correspondents. The totals are modest compared with the turmoil seen elsewhere this week, but they were spread across some of the continent’s busiest hubs.

Palma de Mallorca had the most delays at 249, with two cancellations. Rome Fiumicino logged 223 delays and three cancellations, Barcelona-El Prat 216 delays and two cancellations, and Amsterdam Schiphol 207 delays. Schiphol also posted the most cancellations at 10, ahead of Paris Orly with seven. Frankfurt, Manchester, London Gatwick and Athens rounded out the list with smaller numbers.

The causes were mixed. Heavy rain linked to Storm Adam disrupted flights in Spain, particularly at Palma, while air traffic flow restrictions affected Manchester and Gatwick. Authorities had not confirmed the cause of every delay at Amsterdam, so the picture there remains incomplete.

For passengers, the takeaway is that disruption in Europe is often local and short-lived, but it can ripple into connections quickly. Checking your airline’s app before leaving for the airport, allowing extra time on tight transfers, and knowing your rights to assistance when a flight is cancelled can make a delayed day far less stressful.
