Marriott Is Testing a Way to Show You Where You Stand in the Upgrade Line

Marriott is testing a feature that would show elite members how many complimentary upgrades a hotel has available and where they sit on the list. Members would be notified one day before arrival if an upgrade is confirmed.

Upgrades are one of the most valued and least transparent elite perks. Guests often learn the outcome at check-in with no sense of how many rooms were in play or how they were ranked, so visibility is a notable shift if it rolls out.

It remains a test. Marriott has not said when or whether the feature will become available to all members, and results will probably depend on how hotels respond to guests seeing their place in line.

Hotel news that week also included a new antitrust suit, Andrews v. Expedia Group, filed in Seattle. It alleges Expedia’s rate parity rules inflate hotel prices by 15 to 30 percent and notes that the company handles 78 percent of U.S. hotel booking dollars through online travel agencies. The claims are allegations, not findings.
