Thailand Wants Fewer Tourists Who Spend More, and Airlines Are Taking Notice

A temple in Thailand

Thailand’s tourism authority is putting spending per visitor ahead of raw arrival numbers, with the stated goal of becoming a leading high-value destination in Asia. The campaign slogan is Transform Together, Win Together, and the strategy is already showing up in the flight map.

Virgin Atlantic began London Heathrow to Phuket flights on October 18, operating three times a week. LOT Polish Airlines introduced Warsaw to Bangkok service, and Thai Vietjet started daily Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok flights. On October 14, the tourism authority also partnered with Tripadvisor to analyze booking patterns for route planning.

Thailand is not alone in rethinking volume. Japan tripled its international departure tax to 3,000 yen from July 1, 2026, and its tourism plan is moving away from chasing visitor totals. Malaysia’s MADANI framework aims to raise per-visitor spending with a focus on wellness and halal tourism, while Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 targets 150 million visits by 2030 with high-value leisure developments such as Red Sea Global and AlUla.

For travelers, a high-value push can mean more premium options, new nonstop routes and sharper competition between carriers, but it may also bring higher fees or taxes in some markets. Anyone planning a Southeast Asia trip for 2027 should watch for new direct flights that cut connection time, and compare total trip costs rather than airfare alone.
