Viking Is Nearly Sold Out for 2026 and Still Building More Ships

Viking has christened seven new river ships, naming Viking Rota and Viking Haki in Amsterdam and five more virtually, with ships sailing in France, Germany and Egypt. Seven longtime travel advisors served as godparents, a nod to the sales channel that fills many of the line’s cabins.

Five of the vessels are Longships carrying 190 guests in 95 staterooms for the Rhine, Main and Danube, while Viking Fjolvar will sail the Seine. Viking Ptah and Viking Sekhmet each carry 82 passengers in 41 staterooms on the Nile, bringing that fleet to eight identical ships, and both serve the 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids itinerary.

The scale is striking. Viking expects 18 more river ships by 2028, which would take its fleet to 114. In 2025 it carried 782,138 passengers, about 52 percent of the river sector. The line says it is effectively sold out for 2026 and just over half sold out for 2027, with roughly $4.7 billion in advance bookings.

For travelers, that level of demand points to a clear rule: if you want a specific river, date or stateroom category in 2027, booking sooner is likely to matter more than waiting for a promotion. Low water on some rivers remains a risk, so it is worth asking how itineraries are adjusted when levels drop.
