An American 787 From Barcelona Blew a Tire Landing in Chicago

Busy airport terminal with travelers

An American Airlines Boeing 787 arriving from Barcelona suffered a tire blowout while landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday, October 20, at around 2:30 p.m. local time. The crew had reported a brake issue, and the jet landed safely with 234 passengers and 11 crew on board.

Passengers left the aircraft by stairs and were bused to the terminal rather than evacuating down slides. WGN-TV reported that one person was taken to a hospital in good condition, citing fire officials. No other injuries were reported in the coverage reviewed.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate. As of the latest reporting, details such as the flight number and runway had not been published, and American Airlines had not issued a statement that was available to the outlet that first reported the incident.

Tire and brake problems on landing are a known category of event, and crews are trained to handle them. What matters for travelers is the outcome: the aircraft stopped, everyone got off, and the cause is now with investigators. Those with onward connections should check their airline app for rebooking options.
