Southwest Airlines wants to be the first major U.S. carrier with Starlink satellite internet on every airplane it flies. As of October 16, the airline had connected 47 aircraft, according to Tony Roach, its chief customer and brand officer.
That number sits well below an earlier ambition. Previously in 2026, Southwest talked about installing the technology on more than 300 aircraft by the end of the year. The airline now expects the full fleet to be equipped by the fall of 2027, a timeline that stretches the rollout across another year of flying.
The first Starlink-equipped Southwest jet entered service in the summer of 2026, after the airline struck its partnership with the satellite provider earlier in the year. For passengers, the headline perk is cost: Wi-Fi is free for Rapid Rewards members, delivered through T-Mobile, which makes the service a loyalty benefit rather than a paid add-on.
Roach described customer reaction as overwhelmingly positive. The practical advice for flyers is that there is no guarantee your flight has the new equipment yet, and with most of the fleet still waiting its turn, it may be worth checking the airline’s equipment details before assuming fast, free internet will be on board.
