A $250 Million Loan Is Quietly Redrawing Morocco’s Hotel Map

Morocco’s hotel sector has landed a major financing deal. On October 15, Zilla Capital announced a $250 million sustainability-linked package from the International Finance Corporation and Attijariwafa bank for the Pickalbatros hotel group. The adviser on the deal described it as Morocco’s largest IFC-backed hospitality financing to date.

The money has several jobs. It will fund the acquisition of two Casablanca hotels, the Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche and the Mövenpick Hotel Casablanca, along with upgrades to properties in Marrakech and Agadir, and the refinancing of existing debt.

The group already operates more than 2,700 rooms across nine hotels in Morocco, so the purchases deepen a footprint that spans the country’s business capital and two of its most popular leisure destinations. The “sustainability-linked” label means the terms are tied to environmental performance targets, though the specific targets were not detailed in the announcement coverage.

For travellers, the near-term effect will be gradual: renovations in Marrakech and Agadir typically mean refreshed rooms and facilities, while the Casablanca acquisitions put two well-known city hotels under new ownership. Anyone with bookings at those properties may want to check for scheduled refurbishment work.
