Qatar Airways has announced it will fly from Doha’s Hamad International Airport to Western Sydney International Airport starting December 15, 2027. Bookings open on December 19, 2026. The announcement comes well over a year ahead of the first departure, a long runway even by airline standards, and signals the carrier wants an early foothold at Sydney’s second major airport.
The service will operate three times a week with a Boeing 777-300ER configured with 42 Business Class and 312 Economy seats. Qatar says it plans to grow the route to daily flights. Western Sydney would become the airline’s seventh Australian gateway, adding to a network that already connects Doha with the country’s main east and west coast cities.
The choice is notable because Western Sydney sits far from the harbor and the existing Kingsford Smith airport, closer to the fast-growing suburbs and the Blue Mountains. For visitors, that changes the arrival experience: hotels in the central business district are a longer ride away, while the Blue Mountains and the region’s wineries and wildlife parks are comparatively close. Travelers should check ground transport plans before booking onward connections.
It was one of many network announcements this week, from Alaska’s new Pacific routes to Air Serbia’s six-route expansion. Because the first flight is more than a year away, schedules and aircraft can still change, so wait for bookings to open in December before building plans around the service. Doha also serves as a major hub for onward connections to Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
