If you fly Ryanair, a habit may need to change soon. For flights departing on or after November 10, 2026, airport check-in desks and bag-drop counters will close 60 minutes before scheduled departure, up from 40 minutes. Flights through November 9 keep the old cutoff.
The change applies across the whole network, not a single hub or country. Ryanair announced it in April, so it has been coming for months, but many passengers who book once or twice a year are unlikely to have noticed. The rule covers counter processing only, and gate deadlines are unchanged.
The penalty for missing it is steep. Ryanair’s terms allow it to deny boarding with no refund, and the report on the change says EU261 compensation would not apply in that situation. Travelers who check in online and carry only a cabin bag are not subject to the counter cutoff, which makes that option more attractive.
Ryanair’s own at-airport guidance still recommends arriving two hours before departure for the desk or bag drop. With the cutoff now an hour out, that buffer is less of a suggestion and more of a safeguard, especially at busy airports where queues for bag drop can run long.
