American Airlines will start flying from Miami to Barcelona, a city on Venezuela’s northeast coast, on January 15, 2027. It will be the airline’s first service to the city, using a premium-cabin Embraer 175 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. American announced the route on October 16, and tickets went on sale on October 19 through aa.com and its mobile app.
The new route builds on an unusual year for the market. American says it became the first US airline since 2019 to resume Venezuela service earlier in 2026. After earthquakes in Venezuela, it operated a relief flight to Caracas, and it was the first US carrier to restore daily service once Caracas reopened to international flights.
Barcelona joins Caracas and Maracaibo on the network. With the new route, American will operate 24 weekly flights between the US and Venezuela, including twice-daily Miami to Caracas service and daily Miami to Maracaibo. The Embraer 175 offers Wi-Fi and in-seat power in addition to its premium seating, a modest upgrade in comfort on a route that was off the map for US carriers for years.
Travellers should note that Barcelona, Venezuela, is not the Spanish city of the same name, so it is worth checking the airport code, BLA, when booking. Government travel advice for Venezuela is a separate matter and should be reviewed before any trip, along with entry requirements for your passport.
