Miami Is Letting AI Watch the Cruise Terminal Traffic Jam

PortMiami is rolling out new traffic management measures ahead of the 2026-2027 cruise season, including AI-powered monitoring of congestion around the terminals. The port expects 81 peak days with seven to ten ships calling, which is when roads into downtown Miami tend to back up.

The technology comes from GridMatrix, selected for the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority’s Public Innovation Challenge pilot. Its computer vision system will watch for congestion and help officials anticipate bottlenecks before they build. Passengers will also see two short videos, titled Arrive at Your Embarkation Time and Choosing the Right Entrance, and are reminded to show up at their assigned times.

Entrance choice depends on the terminal. Terminals AA, A, B, C and D are reached through the PortMiami Tunnel, while E, F, G, J and V use the PortMiami Bridge. Rideshare and passenger motor carriers are directed to the tunnel, and taxis follow separate staging routes. Deputies and city police will support traffic along Biscayne Boulevard on selected dates, and cargo roadways will relieve downtown and I-395.

There is also a shuttle angle. Carnival began a pilot in October with complimentary rides to Miami International Airport for Carnival Celebration passengers on selected dates, and Royal Caribbean’s free airport shuttle for Icon of the Seas guests continues on selected dates.
