Singapore to Kazakhstan Now Runs Through China, Without Clearing Chinese Immigration

Steppe landscape in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s SCAT Airlines began flying between Shymkent and Singapore on October 20, with a stop in Sanya on China’s Hainan island. The service operates twice weekly, and the Boeing 737 MAX 8 offers economy seating only. End to end the trip takes about 11.5 hours, according to Travel CTM, a long day but a rare direct-style link between Central Asia and Southeast Asia.

The notable feature is the transit. Passengers stay airside during the roughly two-hour stop in Sanya and do not pass through Chinese passport control, so no Chinese immigration clearance is needed. According to the Astana Times, Shymkent to Sanya takes about 6.5 hours and the Sanya to Singapore leg nearly three hours, with the stop sitting in between.

Separately, Kazakh citizens can stay in China visa-free for up to 30 calendar days per trip, though that is not required for this routing. Another Kazakh carrier, FlyArystan, has advised passengers flying to or from China to arrive at least three hours early from September 15 because immigration checks may take longer, a reminder that China-bound journeys can involve more time at the airport.

For people connecting between Central Asia and Southeast Asia, the route offers a one-stop option without entering China. Anyone considering it should confirm the airline’s current schedule and the transit rules that apply to their own passport before booking, since airside-transit arrangements can depend on nationality and itinerary.
