TAP Is Redrawing Its Atlantic Map With Three Small Moves

Inside a busy airport terminal

TAP Air Portugal is adding three routes that stretch its reach across the Atlantic and out to Cape Verde. The most unusual is Lisbon to São Luís in northern Brazil, which will run twice a week. The outbound flight is nonstop, but the return leg stops in Fortaleza, a pattern that lets the airline fill seats on both ends of a thin route.

The second change is a restoration. TAP will bring back nonstop service between Lisbon and Caracas, reconnecting a city with a large Portuguese-speaking community and strong family ties to Portugal. The third is a new direct link from Porto to Sal in Cape Verde, giving the country’s second city its own route to the island rather than forcing a connection through Lisbon.

Taken together, the moves reflect a familiar TAP strategy: use Lisbon as a hub, but add selective point-to-point flights where demand justifies it. The Porto route is the clearest example, since northern Portugal has long wanted more direct services. The São Luís flight tests whether secondary Brazilian cities can sustain nonstop links to Europe, even if only on a couple of days a week.

Travelers should check exact schedules, aircraft and start dates in the airline’s booking engine before planning around any of these services. Twice-weekly flights are easy to miss when building an itinerary, and a tag-along stop in Fortaleza on the return can make arrival times unusual. Those who value a direct, single-airline journey to northern Brazil or Cape Verde now have more options than last month.
