Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened four new gates in Terminal A in mid-October: A10, A11, A13 and A15. They are the first part of a 10-gate expansion built for American Airlines, which uses DFW as its largest hub. The project amounts to five rebuilt gates and five new ones, for a net gain of five gates in the terminal.
The work is a 140,000-square-foot pier expansion, and six more gates are still to come to reach the total of ten. According to the airport, the full pier is expected to open in time for the winter holiday travel season, which is when more gate capacity tends to matter most for on-time performance and for how smoothly aircraft can be turned around.
The Terminal A project sits inside DFW Forward, a multiyear capital improvement program valued at about $12 billion. It follows American’s announcement earlier this year of nine new gates at the airport, part of a steady run of expansion at a hub that has seen heavy growth in recent years.
For travelers connecting through Dallas, the practical effect will show up as more flexibility for American’s operation rather than any change to ticket prices or routes. The new gates are open now, so passengers connecting in Terminal A may already find themselves boarding at one of the four new positions, with the remaining six arriving before the holiday rush.
