Getting to one of the Arctic’s best-known landscapes just became easier on paper. Ilulissat International Airport opened on October 29 in Greenland, with a 2,200-metre runway designed to accept larger passenger aircraft than the town’s previous airfield could handle.
Ilulissat is the gateway to the Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the main reasons visitors travel to Greenland. A longer runway matters in a place where flights are the practical way in and out, and where aircraft size shapes how many people can arrive at once.
Do not expect a sudden rush of new services, however. Greenland Airports says activity at the new airport will rise gradually toward summer 2027, which suggests airlines will phase in capacity rather than switch on a full schedule from day one.
For travelers, the main message is to watch for schedules over the coming months. The infrastructure is now in place for bigger aircraft, and the peak summer season in 2027 is the point at which the airport is expected to show how much extra access it really delivers.
