France’s railways are heading for a national strike on Thursday, November 5. Four unions have called it: CGT-Cheminots, UNSA-Ferroviaire, SUD-Rail and CFDT-Cheminots. The date stands out because it falls the day before the planned inaugural run of the new TGV M.
Disruption could reach well beyond the headline high-speed network. TGV and Intercités services, regional TER trains and Paris-region services could all be affected, so travelers with plans anywhere on the French rail map should keep an eye on their bookings.
There is still a window for the dispute to change. The unions are due to meet management on November 3, and SNCF normally publishes its operating plan for a strike day around 5pm the day before, which would put the detailed picture on the evening of November 4.
Eurostar is not named as part of the strike, though travelers connecting through Paris or other French stations should check. Anyone who can move a journey away from November 5 will have the simplest path; otherwise, wait for the SNCF plan and confirm the specific train before heading to the station.
