Denali Swapped Its Seasonal Permit Cap for a Daily Limit of 160 Vehicles

The National Park Service has changed how it rations driving access to Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. In a final rule announced in mid-October, the agency replaced the old seasonal cap of 10,512 vehicle permits on the restricted stretch of the Denali Park Road with a daily limit of up to 160 vehicles during the visitor season.

The restricted section runs from mile 15 to mile 90. The Interior Department says the new limit applies as long as resource-condition and visitor-experience standards are met, and that it brings the rule in line with the park’s 2012 Vehicle Management Plan. The release also ties the change to an executive order on national park access.

A second change affects the calendar. The season will now always end on the second Thursday after Labor Day. Under the previous rule, it could end as early as September 15 when that date fell earlier, and officials say the update adds visitor opportunities in those years. The season still starts on the Saturday before Memorial Day.

The announcement also looks ahead. The Park Service plans to restore public bus access to the west end of the park road in 2027, and it noted that the Pretty Rocks Bridge was completed in September, reconnecting the road after the 2021 landslide. Anyone planning a summer 2027 Denali trip should watch park pages for permit and bus details.
