Getting to Heathrow Got Messier After a Vehicle Hit a Railway Bridge

Train arriving at a London station

Two rail problems hit the main train links to Heathrow on November 3. In the first, a road vehicle struck a railway bridge, and Heathrow Express warned that trains between Paddington and the airport could be delayed by up to ten minutes or cancelled. The notice covered the period from 12:31 to 23:59, and it did not give a cancellation count or the bridge location.

Separately, defective track near Hayes and Harlington forced speed restrictions and caused severe Elizabeth line delays from early in the day. The two disruptions together affected the two best-known rail routes between central London and the airport.

National Rail set up temporary ticket-acceptance arrangements for affected passengers, but Heathrow Express tickets are not automatically valid on every alternative service. Heathrow Airport itself was not reported closed and flights were not suspended, so the impact was mainly on how people reached the terminals.

The usual Paddington to Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 trip takes about 15 minutes. If your service is disrupted, the Piccadilly line and buses are slower alternatives. Anyone catching an early flight should check operator updates before leaving and allow extra time, since conditions can change within the day.
