Seattle Is Retiring the Line-Skipping Trick Before Thanksgiving Ends

Travelers waiting in an airport security checkpoint line

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s free SEA Spot Saver, which let travelers reserve a time slot at security, will end permanently on November 30, 2026. Reservations booked through November 29 will still be honored at Checkpoint 4, so anyone flying out over the Thanksgiving weekend can use it one last time. The airport has not announced a replacement queue-management system.

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, and the Sunday after, November 29, is projected to be the busiest day for travel at Sea-Tac and nationwide, a pattern reported to have held for five years running. Wednesday, November 25 is expected to move roughly 170,000 passengers through the airport, which sets the stage for a crowded stretch right as the reservation tool disappears.

Officials say more than 94 percent of travelers already clear security within 20 minutes without a reservation, which is presumably part of the case for retiring the program. Still, holiday peaks are exactly when averages stop being a useful guide, and travelers who counted on a guaranteed window will now be gambling on the standard lines.

The practical advice circulating for the holiday is familiar: arrive two to three hours early, enroll in TSA PreCheck or CLEAR if you travel often, and consider the Link light rail to skip curbside congestion. TSA and the Port of Seattle had not yet published official 2026 holiday forecasts at the time of the reporting.
