Victoria Says Demand Outran Its Yangtze Fleet, So Another Ship Is Coming

River scene in China

Victoria Cruise Lines says it will add a new Yangtze River ship with an inaugural voyage in 2028. The vessel is unnamed so far. In a release issued November 2, company president Benson Wu said sustained demand from Europe and Australia created capacity challenges during peak periods of the 2026 season, which is the reason for the expansion.

The line describes itself as the only American-managed operator on the Yangtze, and notes that its Victoria Sabrina, built in 2020, and Victoria Isabella were billed as the world’s largest river cruise vessels. Because the demand claims come from the company’s own announcement, they are best read as self-reported rather than independently verified.

The release also points to US travel partners, including Globus, Gate 1 Travel and Ritz Tours. Gate 1’s 15-day small-group China program, capped at 22 travelers and running downstream on the Yangtze with two nights in Chengdu, is described as its fastest-growing product line. Ritz Tours is expanding its 2027 and 2028 China itineraries to include Yunnan, Zhangjiajie and Chongqing.

If the company’s account holds, it hints at a gradual recovery in Western interest in China tours. A new ship will not change anything for travelers booking in the next year, but it suggests operators are betting on enough sustained demand to justify building more capacity for the Yangtze’s multi-day cruises.
