KLM has put its first Airbus A350-900 into passenger service. The aircraft, named De Nachtwacht, arrived at KLM on October 2, 2026, and flight KL0691 left Amsterdam Schiphol for Toronto Pearson on October 30 carrying passengers and eight metric tons of cargo.
The jet has 331 seats: 34 in World Business Class, 26 in Premium Comfort and 271 in Economy, according to the Air France-KLM release linked in the report. Air France has flown the A350 since 2019. KLM describes the move as part of a long-haul fleet renewal toward quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft, following the introduction of the A321neo on part of its European network.
KLM’s planned A350 destinations include Montreal, plus Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Nairobi and Zanzibar. The article stresses these are deployment plans rather than new routes, and that schedules and aircraft assignments can change, so there is no guarantee a given flight will use the new jet.
The debut also drew plane enthusiasts. Two fans made T-shirts reading the first commercial flight on the route, and a father and son flew from New York to Amsterdam to join the inaugural flight before heading home via Toronto. For regular travelers, the practical takeaway is to check the aircraft type when booking if cabin product matters.
