New Jersey Cut a 73-Day REAL ID Wait to Three Days

New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission announced this week that REAL ID appointments are now available in about three days. At the start of 2026 the average wait was 73 days, so the agency describes the change as a 96 percent reduction. The announcement arrives just ahead of the holiday travel rush, when many residents need an approved ID for domestic flights.

The MVC says it has issued 750,000 REAL IDs this year and is nearing one million. Governor Sherrill called the earlier wait unacceptable, and acting chief administrator Rosalie Johnson said in the agency’s release that the commission solved capacity challenges by working smarter rather than spending more.

Three changes drove the improvement: digital proof of residency is now accepted from a phone or tablet, which the agency says halved failed transactions and repeat visits; document verification was streamlined; and REAL ID service was added at seven more locations this year. The fee is $35 for a four-year license or ID, or $11 for an early upgrade that keeps the current expiration date. A temporary paper license is issued at the appointment, and the card arrives by mail within about two weeks.

The stakes are practical. Since May 2025, the TSA has required a REAL ID or another approved document, such as a passport, for domestic flights. Earlier reporting by WHYY in June had put the average wait at about 40 days, down from roughly 75, so the improvement has been gradual. Residents who still lack a compliant ID can check the MVC’s scheduling system for openings.
