Alicante Wants You to Look Up From the Sand

Alicante, a city most visitors associate with its seafront and beaches, has published its first cultural guide. The tourism board, Alicante City&Beach, printed 25,000 copies of the fold-out publication, which is available in Spanish, English, French and German and includes a map plus QR-linked information.

The guide points visitors to 43 sites across three categories: historic and monumental heritage, museums and cultural facilities, and artists’ studios. Named landmarks include Santa Bárbara Castle, the Co-Cathedral of St Nicholas, the Basilica of St Mary, the Central Market, the Main Theatre and the Hermitage of Santa Cruz.

Museums and venues in the listings include the MACA Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante, the MARQ Archaeological Museum, the MUBAG Fine Arts Museum, Las Cigarreras, the Museum of Water and the Interpretation Centre of the Orchard Towers. Adding artist studios gives the guide a wider scope than a standard monuments leaflet and highlights contemporary creative life alongside the historic buildings.

Tourism councillor Ana Poquet said the resource is meant to showcase the city’s cultural offer, and it will be distributed through tourism offices as well as national and international promotion. For travellers booking a sun break, it is a prompt to build a day or two of sightseeing into the trip rather than treating the city only as a beach base.
