Hyatt Is Betting Singapore Families Will Ferry Their Way to a Private Island

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has signed a management agreement with Batam-based developer PT Citra Buana Prakarsa for the Hyatt Regency Kapal Besar Island Resort. The planned property would have 140 rooms and suites on Pulau Kapal Besar, a private island in Indonesia’s Riau Islands. The signing ceremony took place on November 3, and Hyatt announced the deal the following day.

The main selling point is proximity. Hyatt estimates the trip from Singapore’s HarbourFront at about 50 minutes, passing through Nirup Island, which has the nearest immigration checkpoint, followed by a short ferry. If it opens as planned, it would be the Hyatt Regency brand’s first resort in the Riau Islands. The company calls 2031 a target rather than a confirmed opening date.

The resort is aimed squarely at families, group holidays and celebrations such as weddings. Planned facilities include a spa, fitness center, outdoor pools and a Camp Hyatt children’s club with indoor and outdoor space and an entertainment center, set among a lake, mangroves and coastal landscapes. Room mix, dining, pricing and reservation timing have not been disclosed.

The developer, founded in 1988, reports a hospitality portfolio of more than 1,400 keys and already operates resorts on Nirup Island, with further projects planned on Pulau Layang and Pulau Kapal Kecil. No construction schedule has been given. Anyone eyeing a Singapore getaway should file this under long-range news, since five years is a long time in resort development.
