United’s Most Awaited Plane Has Arrived, but You Can’t Fly It Yet

Premium airline cabin with reclined seats

United Airlines has received its first Airbus A321neo in the Coastliner configuration, wearing a special exterior wrap. The jet is meant for the airline’s most premium coast-to-coast flights, and passengers will not board it right away: United had hoped for a summer 2026 debut, but Airbus delays pushed it to early 2027.

When it does enter service, United expects to put it on Newark to Los Angeles and Newark to San Francisco, and possibly on JFK routes if the airline returns there. The cabin is the headline. It has 10 rows, or 20 seats, of Polaris suites in a 1-2-1-style layout with sliding privacy doors, plus Polaris Lounge access.

Behind that sit 12 Premium Plus recliners in three rows of 2-2, and an economy cabin with a walk-up snack bar, a rare touch for a domestic-style narrowbody. The interior closely matches the A321XLR that United showed in late summer 2026.

The bigger picture is scale. United has 50 Coastliners and 50 XLRs on order, so this first delivery is the opening of a long rollout rather than a one-off showpiece. For travelers who prefer lie-flat seating on transcontinental trips, the wait should be measured in months, not years.
