Columbus, Ohio, Is About to Get Its First Direct Line to Europe

A Lufthansa passenger jet flying in a clear blue sky

Columbus, Ohio, has never had a scheduled route to Europe, and Lufthansa is about to change that. The German carrier says it will begin flying between Frankfurt and John Glenn Columbus International (CMH) on May 5 next year.

The service will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners with business, premium economy and economy cabins. Reports on frequency conflicted, with the article text and the page summary giving different figures, so travelers should check the schedule with Lufthansa when booking opens.

For Lufthansa, Columbus becomes its 20th U.S. destination. The airline has been adding mid-size American cities to its map, and Ohio’s capital is a logical fit, with a large university population, major corporate employers and a metro area that has grown quickly.

For passengers, a nonstop to Frankfurt opens easy connections across Lufthansa’s European and Asian network without a stop at another U.S. gateway first. That should shave hours off many trips that currently route through Chicago, New York or Washington.
