American Airlines and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport have opened the first four gates of the expanded Terminal A pier. The 140,000-square-foot addition will eventually hold ten gates, five renovated and five new, and American will operate all of them.
The next two gates are due to open within a couple of weeks, with the final four expected for the holiday season. Passengers will notice electronic boarding technology that validates boarding passes without an agent and regulates the pace of boarding; DFW first introduced the system with the Terminal C expansion in June.
The pier also adds expanded seating areas, power stations and new concessions. The article does not give a cost for this pier on its own, but it is part of the $12 billion DFW Forward capital program, which includes more than 180 construction projects across the airport through the end of the decade.
What happens next is more construction. Once all ten Terminal A gates are in service, American plans to begin rebuilding and expanding the rest of Terminal C, which it also occupies. The earlier Terminal C pier expansion added nine gates, so DFW’s busiest airline hub is being renovated in stages.
