Airbnb Just Told Hosts to Stop Making You Do the Dishes

Bright vacation rental living room

Airbnb has set new limits on what hosts can ask guests to do before checking out, The Points Guy reports. The company says requests must be reasonable, and that asking guests to do work a cleaner should handle can hurt a host’s rating.

On dishes and laundry, hosts can no longer ask guests to wash and put away dishes, but they can ask them to place used dishes in the sink. Hosts also cannot ask guests to strip the bed or start a load of laundry, though they can ask guests to gather used towels.

Trash and utilities get similar treatment. Hosts cannot require guests to take garbage off the property, but they can ask them to sort trash and recycling into indoor bins. And hosts cannot ask guests to avoid using a listed amenity such as air conditioning, although they can ask guests to turn it off when they leave.

The same hotel-news roundup notes that Marriott’s Luxury Collection has launched The Luxury Collection Expeditions, which it describes as a collection of journeys. Examples include an artist-led experience in Kyoto, an Italy tour in classic cars called the Grand Italia Rally, and a beach fishing excursion in Turks and Caicos. For rental guests, the practical takeaway is to read each listing’s checkout instructions, since the new policy is aimed at what hosts may request.
