Vienna Rolls Out Its Christmas Markets in Two Waves

Illuminated Christmas market stalls in Vienna

Vienna’s holiday season starts a week earlier than some visitors may expect. According to Euronews Travel’s November planner, the Christmas markets at Schönbrunn Palace and Stephansplatz open on Nov. 6, while the market at Rathausplatz follows a week later on Nov. 13.

That staggered schedule matters for anyone planning an early-winter city break. A trip built around the first weekend of November will find two markets running, one framed by the imperial palace grounds and one in the heart of the old town beside the cathedral, but not the city hall square that many visitors associate with the season.

Vienna is not alone in moving into festive mode. The same guide notes that Strasbourg, Nuremberg and Prague shift into full Christmas mode later in November, so early-November travelers who want markets can pair Vienna with a trip in the days before those cities fill with crowds.

Opening dates for individual markets can shift from year to year, and opening hours vary by site, so it is worth confirming times on the official Vienna tourism pages before booking flights or hotels around a specific market.
