Greenland has opened the last piece of a major airport overhaul. The new international airport in Ilulissat, the country’s third-largest town, opened on Thursday after approval by the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority, and it opens up direct access to Disko Bay and North Greenland.
It is the third new airport Greenland has brought online since 2024, following Nuuk in November 2024 and Qaqortoq in April 2026. Ilulissat’s runway is 2,200 meters long, long enough to handle the kind of jet service that smaller Greenlandic strips could not.
Airlines are already lining up. Air Greenland launched a direct Ilulissat–Copenhagen route on opening day, operated by Jettime with a Boeing 737-800, mainly on Wednesdays, with the regular winter schedule starting in November. Icelandair will add a seasonal Keflavík–Ilulissat service from June 3 to October 16, 2027.
Greenland Airports says its goal is for the new airport to be fully operational by the summer 2027 season. For travelers, that points to easier, more direct routes into one of the Arctic’s best-known destinations, though schedules and fares are still taking shape.
