A Major Italian Airport Is Shutting Down for All of November

Airport runway and terminal

Anyone planning to fly into Naples this month needs a plan B. The city’s airport is set to close to air traffic for the entire month of November while contractors renovate its runway and taxiway, a project reported to cost around €30 million.

The work covers the runway and taxiway surfaces as well as replacement of the visual aids lighting systems, and it is scheduled to run around the clock, seven days a week. Rather than keep flying at reduced capacity, the airport has opted for a full shutdown so the job can be finished in one concentrated stretch.

Flights are being diverted to Salerno Costa d’Amalfi and Cilento airport, about an hour’s drive south. Carriers named as affected include Ryanair, easyJet and Vueling, so travelers booked on those airlines should check where their flight now lands before heading to the airport.

To soften the detour, an extra bus service will link Naples Piazza Garibaldi with Salerno Airport through November, and a trial shared-taxi service with fixed fares will run from Salerno Airport to both Naples Central and Salerno Central stations. Passengers should confirm timetables and fares with their airline or the airport before travel.
