Electric Air Taxis Just Flew Over Tampa Bay, but You Can’t Book One Yet

Electric aircraft in flight

Electric air taxis took to the skies over Tampa Bay on October 30, 2026, in demonstration flights that offer a glimpse of how regional travel might one day work. The flights were part of the federal Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing Integration Pilot Program, known as eIPP.

Two manufacturers took part. Joby Aviation flew its S4 eVTOL, while BETA Technologies demonstrated its ALIA CX300. Florida is the seventh demonstration location in a federal initiative that covers eight selected projects across 28 US states.

The key caveat is easy to miss in the excitement. Authorities have not announced regular commercial electric air taxi passenger services between these destinations, so for now the flights are showcases rather than something travelers can book.

Still, the pilot program shows how seriously regulators are testing the concept across the country. Travelers curious about the technology should watch for later announcements on routes, pricing and certification before expecting an air taxi to replace a rideshare or short-haul flight.
