Copenhagen Is Building a Bathhouse Big Enough for 380 Swimmers

Spa pool and sauna

Copenhagen’s harbor is about to get a serious new reason to get wet. KAI, a self-described water culture house on Paper Island, is due to open on December 5, with a design by the architecture firm Kengo Kuma & Associates.

The scale is the surprise. The complex covers some 5,800 square meters and can handle 380 bathers at any given time. Inside are 10 swimming pools, alongside harbor swimming and dipping zones that put visitors directly beside the water.

Beyond the pools, the facilities lean into Nordic and Japanese bathing traditions. There are three saunas, a heated stone and a steam bath, plus an outdoor onsen, giving winter visitors plenty of ways to warm up between dips in the cold.

An opening in early December means KAI will debut just as Copenhagen heads into its darkest, coldest months, when hot-and-cold bathing tends to be most appealing. Pricing and booking details were not included in the reporting, so travelers should check the venue’s own channels before planning a visit.
