An American Airlines Plane Just Went Somewhere Nobody Else Will Fly

American Airlines resumed service to Haiti on Sunday, November 1, after a pause of nearly two years. The airline now flies daily nonstop between Miami and Cap-Haitien on Boeing 737 aircraft, and AirlineGeeks reports it is the first and only U.S.-based carrier to restart Haiti service.

U.S. airlines suspended flights in 2024 as gang violence surged in and around Port-au-Prince. Toussaint Louverture International Airport was briefly closed after bullets struck aircraft taxiing on the tarmac, which was among the incidents that pushed carriers out.

The inaugural flight was staffed by an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew. Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s senior vice president of Miami operations, said in a company release that the U.S.-Haiti connection is incredibly meaningful, especially in South Florida.

The restart serves Cap-Haitien in the north rather than the capital. Travelers should still check U.S. State Department advisories for Haiti before planning a trip, as the security situation that triggered the suspension has not been described as resolved.
