Capital One Adds a Latin American Airline While Chase Reportedly Gets Pickier

Credit cards and travel planning

Copa Airlines’ ConnectMiles program is Capital One’s newest airline transfer partner, joining recent additions Rove and Citi. Transfers normally run at a ratio of 2 to 1.5, but through December 1 a 30 percent bonus makes it 975 ConnectMiles for every 1,000 Capital One miles, with a 1,000-mile minimum and 100-mile increments.

Sample award prices cited in the coverage include 55,000 miles for United Polaris business class from San Francisco to Newark, and 90,000 or more for Star Alliance business class to Europe. Because Copa is a Star Alliance member, ConnectMiles can unlock partner awards beyond its own Latin American network.

On the Chase side, the picture is less certain. Applicants at 3 of 24 and 4 of 24 say they have been denied Chase business cards since mid-September, suggesting a stricter threshold than the long-standing 5 of 24 rule of thumb. Chase has not confirmed any change, and the reports come largely from online forums.
