A European River Cruise Where the Kayaks Come Standard

Kayaks on a calm river

European river cruising is about to get a more active cousin. A new brand called River Expeditions, founded by expedition leader Jan Bryde, who has more than 30 years of experience in remote regions, has signed a long-term charter with Crucemundo Shipping AG for a renovated vessel that will be renamed River Expedition.

The ship, currently called River Silence, will carry 160 guests and uses a twin-cruiser layout that separates the propulsion from passenger areas to reduce noise and vibration. Service is planned from early 2028 on the Rhine, Main and Danube, three of the continent’s best-known river corridors.

What sets it apart is the onboard kit and crew. Each trip is planned to carry ten expedition professionals, along with ten double kayaks, e-bikes and seasonal gear, so guests can paddle or ride instead of simply watching towns pass by. Named expedition leaders include Ida Olsson and Ryan Hope-Inglis.

Pricing and itineraries have not been detailed in the announcement, and the plans are still more than a year away. Still, the concept reflects a broader push by cruise brands to move beyond the sightseeing-and-buffet model and offer river itineraries built around physical activity and guided exploration.
