Malaysia Airlines Is Courting UK Travelers With Points and Pay-Later

Malaysia Airlines used this week’s WTM London trade show to line up two new ways of reaching British customers. The carrier signed a pair of memoranda of understanding with Yonder, a UK rewards and payments brand, covering how travelers might earn and spend when booking flights. Both agreements are statements of intent rather than finished products, and no launch date has been announced.

The first proposal would let Yonder members transfer their rewards into Enrich, the airline’s loyalty program. If it goes ahead, points earned on everyday spending in the UK could be converted into progress toward flights on a carrier that serves Kuala Lumpur and a wide network across Asia and Australasia. Transfer partnerships like this are a common way for airlines to reach customers who are not yet frequent flyers.

The second would add Klarna, the buy-now-pay-later service, as a payment option on the airline’s direct bookings. Splitting the cost of a long-haul fare into smaller installments can lower the barrier to booking, and it nudges shoppers toward the airline’s own website instead of third-party sellers, where the carrier typically pays commission.

Travelers should treat this as a signal rather than a deal they can use today. Terms such as transfer ratios, eligible fares and any fees have not been published. If the plans move forward, expect more detail in the coming months, and check the fine print on any installment plan before committing to a ticket.
