Crossing the Pacific Online for Free Is Coming in 2027

Air Tahiti Nui has agreed with SpaceX to bring Starlink satellite Wi-Fi to its Boeing 787-9 fleet during 2027, and says the connection will be free of charge in every travel class. The announcement was made in Papeete on 3 November.

The plan is fleetwide rather than a trial on selected routes or cabins. The airline’s long-distance network links French Polynesia with Paris, Los Angeles, Auckland, Sydney and Tokyo, so reliable connections over remote ocean stretches matter more than on a typical short-haul flight.

Air Tahiti Nui says Starlink will offer high-speed internet with expected latency of 25 to 30 milliseconds and coverage across oceans and other remote regions, usable from takeoff to landing for browsing, messaging, streaming and online games. Those figures describe the announced service rather than measured performance on its aircraft, and actual speeds will depend on conditions.

The big unknown is timing. The airline has not said when the first equipped aircraft will enter service or when installation across the fleet will be complete, so passengers should not assume a particular 2027 flight will have the service until the carrier confirms it. If it arrives as promised, it would remove one more reason to pay for a connection on a long Pacific crossing.
