American Airlines has resumed service to Haiti with daily nonstop Boeing 737 flights between Miami and Cap-Haitien. The airline says Cap-Haitien is its 100th destination in the Caribbean and Latin America network. The flights began November 1 and serve northern Haiti rather than the capital, Port-au-Prince.
The inaugural flight carried an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew, led by Captain Oliver Jean, which the airline highlighted as part of the launch. For many travelers with family ties to the area, the symbolism may matter less than the practical gain of a direct, daily link from the United States.
Because the flight lands in Miami, passengers can connect to more than 90 other United States destinations. The airline says Miami International Airport has over 410 daily departures during peak periods serving more than 170 destinations in 46 countries, which makes it one of its busiest gateways to Latin America and the Caribbean.
The same announcement mentions another new Latin American route from Miami, to Barcelona, Venezuela, beginning January 15. Travelers heading to Haiti should still check current government travel advisories before booking, since conditions can change quickly. This item reports only the airline’s schedule and does not assess security conditions on the ground.
