Vail Resorts Sets 2026-27 Opening Dates as Colorado and Tahoe Properties Prepare for Winter

Snow-covered ski slope and mountain peaks

Vail Resorts announced tentative opening dates for several of its Colorado properties for the 2026-27 winter season on August 18. Keystone is aiming to open as soon as possible in October, positioning it to potentially claim the title of first North American ski resort open for a second consecutive year.

Breckenridge is targeting a November 6 opening, followed by Vail Mountain on November 13. All dates remain contingent on natural snowfall and the resorts’ ability to ramp up snowmaking, and the company cautioned that timing could shift in either direction depending on conditions.

In the Lake Tahoe region, Heavenly, Northstar and Mt. Rose are targeting November 20 openings, with Palisades Tahoe following on November 25, Boreal Mountain on November 27 and Kirkwood on December 4. Park City Mountain in Utah, also owned by Vail Resorts, has set a firm November 20 start.

Vail’s planning comes as forecasters track a strengthening El Niño pattern that the company hopes will deliver a heavier snow year across the Rockies and Sierra Nevada after several inconsistent seasons. Season pass holders are being encouraged to book early-season lodging now, before availability tightens closer to opening day.
